Ten Tips to ensure that your partnership becomes a success

First Tip

The partners agree in their diversity

Help, I must run! As quickly as possible! The flight instinct is a basic pattern in the horses behavior to escape impending danger. Thus the great friend does not have to escape every time he feels uncomfortable, it's up to me to take him that fear. The horse is different from human beings and in this difference lies the special attraction of dealing with it. The better I am able to understand my partner and learn to empathize his instincts, the more beautiful is our relationship. The frightful behavior of the horse is not malicious, but a natural reaction to protect itself. If I am able to give my partner the feeling that I can protect him, he builds trust and does not take the first opportunity to escape. But even if it trusts me, the horse will ever be a herd animal. In panic situations, it always joins the herd. Just as we human need the involvement in a social environment to be happy, also has the herd animal horse needs for social contacts with his peers. Regular contact with other horses offers our horse the opportunity to maintain his social contacts. The horse is an endurance athlete. As a steppe animal it is accustomed to move about 16 hours a day in the crotch. I can use this urge to move for our partnership and take advantage of a variety of work to enforce our relationship.

Second Tip

Respect is mutual

If I accept my partner in his diversity, the foundation is laid for a good relationship. Then I am able to put myself in my horse. Now I must learn to respect my horse and make him understand, that it must respect me also. Unlike a human partnership should be based on equality in all respects, I have to lead in the human-horse relationship to my animal partner. I am responsible for my sports colleague. Respect means consistency in dealing with the horse. It must know what to do. Violence and aggression in the partnership do not build respect, they promote the fear of the horse and lead to discord in the relationship. Patience and confidence help both partners to ease their first fears. Before I throw myself into the adventure of riding, I should be competent in the respectful handling of the horse. If the horse respects me in the daily handling, it reacts better in the joint exercise. In sports as in the handling of the horse, it is important to respond to his feelings. So I gain the necessary sensibility to understand my horse

Third Tip

Communication is an important part

Only those who communicate with each other, can understand the other. The communication between people is different in the way of the communication between human and animal. Since horses cannot speak, they communicate with their body language. Horses have a distinctive facial expression and have well-recognizable gestures. If I work intensively with my horse, I learn to interpret his expression quickly and correctly. Moods such as attention, yawning, threatening, fear or fatigue can be interpreted by the gestures of the horse. Not only among themselves, the horse tries to lead in rank sets, it will also try in the daily encounter with the human to prevail. Through a unique language and confident body language I can make myself a horse identified as higher in the rank set. Misunderstanding of love for animals can lead to the fact that my horse may be uncontrollable and dangerous. Therefore it is important to find a consistent communication and to lay down rules which have to be respected by both partners. In dealing with the horse as well as in riding, my action leads to a reaction of my horse. A clear assistance giving is an important prerequisite to ensure the horse knows what it has to do.

Fourth Tip

Responding to the feelings of the other

Just as I can have a bad day, I must also concede my partner bad days. In such a situation, empathy and sensitivity is required. This is required in the relationship between people and in partnership with the horse. I am tense, my horse is tense. Every horse is different, so it is important to constantly readjust to the other and his emotional evidences. Therefore horses cannot all be treated equally. Riding is a sensitive action, the quality of sitting on horseback is an important factor whether I unfold the movement of the horse or disturb it. Only when I learned the balanced, rhythmic and relaxed sitting, I can influence my horse the best way. The success and soulful riding will not happen overnight, because my partnership with the horse must grow day by day. By the way! Riders are also athletes and can by a better fitness level improve their position on the horse. Poor posture, due to muscular deficits leads not only to health problems in the rider, but also causes back pains for the horse.

Fifth Tip

Bring momentum to the relationship

Monotony is the beginning of the end of a working partnership! Varied contrast adds life to the relationship and motivates me as rider as well as my horse. But what is the meaning of variety and how can I practise it with my horse? If I realized that my horse has a huge need of movement, the first step is done. It can be divided into spatial and thematic variety. The regular exchange between riding and terrain is not only associated with a higher fun factor for both partners, but also causes that my horse is much more balanced. I also improve access to my partner, who thanks me for my correct behavior with his confidence. A good class, regardless of the discipline (dressage, jumping, ...) should content always involves change. There is a wide variety of methodological approaches to design a training session interesting and improve the relationship with my partner. Since in every partnership there are also times of stagnation and frustration, partnership discussions are meaningful. They help to arrange the relationship and give it new impetus. Talk to a qualified riding instructor, he/she will help you and your horse.

Sixth Tip

A partnership must grow

At the beginning of a partnership, everything seems to be perfect. Everyday usually occurs after a short time, and difficulties that every relationship brings with it have to be overcome together. Too high expectations of my partner can strain the relationship. Especially in sports high expectations can slow down positive developments. Although riding is an individual sport in general, we speak in terms of human-horse relationship of a team. In this partnership, I, as the one responsible for my teammate, cannot switch him like a car on and off. The horse is always in movement and needs regular exercise and training. Sensibility in the daily confrontation is the foundation for sports development. My horse and I have to learn together and it is important that I keep my own expectations not too high. I should always remember that stagnation and frustration appear in the sporty process of development. With patience and stamina I can cope with difficult times. In a "politics of small steps" the partnership should always be directed towards the achievement of small targets. In pursuit reaching our aims in our relationship, it should be ensured that both partners can allocate a different level of development that needs to be balanced in the duration of the relationship. To under-or over demand our partner usually leads to frustration and dissatisfaction. An experienced instructor can help to assess your own performance and that of the horse properly.

Seventh Tip

Rules must be respected

The basis of a working relationship is bound by rules that both partners agree with each other. Dishonesty and lack of communication frequently lead to failure of a relationship. In my partnership in dealing with the horse I have to also hold on rules to ensure that the equestrian sport becomes fun in the long term. Regularity in the handling of the horse is especially important to avoid accidents. The right grooming and saddling has to be learned as well as the loading of the great friend into the trailer. Security can be achieved primarily through the knowledge of how to conduct, and a good education is the first step in this direction. For the purpose of accident prevention I should have the right equipment for me and my horse. A helmet should be mandatory, especially for young riders. But also the horses equipment, saddle and bridle, must fit and function properly! As a human partner I am responsible to tell my partner clearly where to go, because my horse can only distinguish between right and wrong. It cannot interpret gray zones.

Eighth Tip

Achieve small goals together

The almost perfect harmony becomes expressed in a long lasting relationship in the blind trust between both parties. Both parties should work in close cooperation. An expression of harmony between rider and horse is the perfect obedience of the horse, which is expressed in the finest communication and in the body language of both partners. The training of the horse should aim to develop the physical and mental abilities as part of its natural potential. If I move with my horse in that direction, a systematic work helps me and my horse with the help of the training scale of the classical riding school. Not every athlete strives for perfection, but a horse that will not be disturbed in his movement is a content horse. In the gradual development with my partner, I should always remember that I did not develop over night for the Grand Prix riders. I can find help with good trainers who support me and my horse together, and promote us. Step by step!

Ninth Tip

Space is important

Not only in the relationship between people, space is important. Even in my relationship with my horse, I have to create spaces. In my responsibility for the horse I have to care that my horse has enough exercise and live its natural life among peers. Recreation days for the horse are against its nature and should not happen. However, it is not necessary for me to have to deal with my horse all day. As a steppe animal, the horse is originally used to living in the wild. In indoor systems, the nature of the horse should be considered. Horses can compensate temperature variations very well. Our big friend loves fresh air and plenty of light. How I can keep my horse humanely can be explained by my experienced riding instructor.

Tenth Tip

Partner counseling can help

Who has not experienced ever? The relationship with the partner has stuck. They have stagnated or experienced regressive. At this point I wished to see a competent person with the necessary distance, with advice and practical support. In training my horse it can come once to crises. That is no reason to despair, because I can get help from a competent teacher.

Since I am the weaker part in my relationship with my horse, spiritually I am the superior partner, it is up to me to make my relationship with my horse promising: my partner horse can only respond to my requirements. If it reacts with indignation I have usually made a mistake. In my relationship with my horse, it is very important always first to find the error at me, I can think as a human being about what might have gone wrong, my horse cannot do this. Its nature is not evil, this is only due to wrong treatment by the people. In this sense - be kind to your partner horse
